We have had a three day week and a four day week together and we are starting to get into the swing of our routines!
We have begun to review some of our letters and sounds. Each blue take home folder has a copy of these letters with the picture cues we use with them inside. We are hoping after our review for all first graders to have mastered all 26 letter identification and sounds. Often it can take some extra time with one or two letters, so if you notice this at home practice! You can make up games with them, like "what is the beginning sound of ____." One of the easiest times to play these types of games is in the car, just talking as you drive! We have been reviewing some counting. We want to be able to count orally but also count objects identifying 1 to 1 with each item we count. One of the most exciting things we have started is our butterflies! We have caterpillars in our classroom and are learning about the life cycle as we watch them go through metamorphosis! Hot lunch and snack milks are really exciting for first graders. Many of them are excited to try a hot lunch but forget to tell their parents. If you haven't had that conversation with your first grader, ask them! Fridays are especially popular because it is always pizza day! We are off to a good start, this week will be our first five day week! I am sure many first graders are coming home exhausted! This is very normal because they are working hard and learning a lot of new things each day. Even though we are just touching on the start of academics, they have many new names and faces as well as new places and routines! They have been doing great, but I know it takes a lot of energy from all of us! It will get easier for them as the year goes.

Hi everyone! If you found our page you have found our classroom blog! It is going to be a great year together in first grade! Let me tell you about our first day together.
We started our day with Magic Play Dough. We all get white play dough, BUT if we are going to have a great school year it will turn colors as we start to squeeze it! We had a lot of colorful play dough, so we will have a great school year! Students were all given a blue take home folder. This will go home every day. Anything new in the folder will be placed in the LEFT pocket that says "left at home". If you have things to return, feel free to put it on the RIGHT pocket. If you are sending in money, please put it in an envelope or bag with the child's name on it and place it in the communication case. We got to visit our new mailboxes and cubbies organized by our new first grade numbers. We toured our building to see all the important places we will go! We read some books about first grade including First Day Jitters. We talked about the meaning of jitters and our special jitter glitter. We also started counting collections. We will continue this for the next few days and will do this several times throughout the school year. One thing that is new for all our first graders is lunch time! We now eat two times at school, lunch and snack! This can be confusing coming from kindergarten. Students are welcome to buy lunch at this time. They are also welcome to buy a lunch milk to have with their lunches from home. Later in the day we have snack which all students need to bring on their own. We are able to buy a snack milk for this time. Many students wanted a snack milk and did not have money in their accounts yet. If you want to add money to their account you can do that online or by sending money in with your child in an envelope or baggie. We ended our day with a celebration! All students had first day awards and Popsicles! If you have questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me! Thursday, September 19th is our Open House. All families are welcome to come, and I hope to see you there! |
